a poem by John Eric Gulliksen
(upon the assassination of "Bobby" Kennedy)

You've put it on the radio
to tell the multitudes
and you argue
and try to find a reason why

but none of this
(not even an electrocution)
can undo the sickness

Is it that, being man,
we must drag ourselves down
to slimy animistic levels
to ease our turmoil
and is that because
we are afraid
to be godlike?

and so you mourn
and shed your tears
without knowing why

and speak of laws and legislation
revenge and punishment
without realizing whose fault this whole thing was

I mourn too
but not for Robert
or Martin

but for you
and for me

because, I guess,
for a while
we had to be this way
