a poem by John Eric Gulliksen
(album notes from Orpheus Ascending

Listen! Listen!

from before mankind's recollection
sweet tones
an enchanted lyre

echoed down shadowed halls of learning
seeping through factory clatter
subtly drifting through Congress Alley windows
to touch
responsive strings on Charles Street

and four
who had laughed with Pan
sat with the lotus eaters
battled the Lords of Hades
found their way to a cellar

and there
in an Olympian chord
stood Orpheus

And Orpheus grew
as the four came together
and Orpheus played
as the sun rose
and harmony spread gently o'er the earth

and now Orpheus ascends

We who are Orpheus
whose souls are pressed in vinyl
inked on paper
salute you
our Eurydice

This time
shall not look back!
