THE CATACOMBS
a poem by John Eric Gulliksen

Within the city breathe
the catacombs
and each day
little worms go
one extremity to another
cancerous

blue-suited antibody
injected
overwhelmed
for the tumor
(which men call benign)
kills
eventually

mankind's proudest creation
will become a dunghill
perhaps on the morrow
if not yesterday

There are those who try to cleanse
I wish them luck
for death is breeding
in the catacombs
