St. Patrick's Day
New York, 1968

I didn't "get it" then
I think I do
now

IN GREEN
a poem by John Eric Gulliksen

Rum tum tum
wander
Rum tum tum
push aimless circles in the throng
hand on my back pocket

here see, amid the skirl of pipes
millions
in green

Rum tum tum
smell carnival

It's sad to watch a once-proud people
make a spectacle of themselves

Rum tum tum

Who invented race?
it does no good for everyone to only pretend oneness

today you can't cross the street
today you can't walk home

Rum
Rum
Rum tum tum

I used to like bagpipes
I used to like parades
I don't like people much
today
