ONCE
a poem by John Eric Gulliksen

Once
slumber's courtship rejected
I left warmth to enter night
and the trees were weeping
tears crisp
brown
sere

the urgent wail
of sirens 'cross the city
brought terror sweeping downward
from her nocturnal wanderings

I smelt of the wind
and knew that the earth
was
dying
