ROSES
a poem by John Eric Gulliksen

I was growing old seven years ago
I was forty-three thirty years ago
I was sixty-four
Seven times around the altar
Lighting rose of mellowness
And nobody could tell me why everything seemed to be
running by

I was laughing eyes down a cherry lane
Flying butterflies past your windowpane
We were nine

But my yesterdays are so far from me
And my childhood schemes just could never be
Not roses
nor rainbows
nor anything
can make gardens in the sky

I was growing old seven years ago
I was thirty-three forty years ago
I was sixty-four
And nobody would tell me why everything ran right by
roses of mellowness
roses of happiness
roses and roses and roses and roses of mellowness
