a poem by John Eric Gulliksen

Christmas and clean snowy air
Lights all around and slush in your boottops

Sometimes children cry at Christmas
if a long-waited toy doesn't come
Some will grow beyond their parents
to know not only a need for giving
but the lack of someone to receive

Laughing people and red-suited elves
Put a dollar in the kettle
Drive the trains in the toy store window
Remembering childhood
Remember manhood
I remember you
and weep
